Winemaker
Stefan Doktor has been at Schloss Johannisberg since 2008. He graduated from the Austrian Wine Academy with a Diploma in Wine and Spirits and is an IHK-certified sommelier. "1200 years of history at Schloss Johannisberg are my inspiration and my motivation at the same time." - Stefan Doktor
About the Winery
The estate comprises of fifty hectares of vineyards, facing exactly south on a quartzite hill in front of the Taunus mountains in Rheingau. With an inclination of 45 degrees, the vineyards extend up to 182 metres above sea level and offer the grapes perfect exposure. Schloss Johannisberg’s vineyard is located right on the 50th parallel north. The large differences between temperatures during the day and at night are particularly beneficial for promoting the aromatic and taste components of the grapes.
Three hundred hectares to the north of Schloss Johannisberg lies its very own forest. The wood from the oaks native to the area is used as a raw material to produce the wooden barrels used in the wine production. The natural texture of the wood, its structure and characteristics influence the flavour and quality of these exquisite wines. Schloss Johannisberg is a leading member of the Verband Deutscher Pradikatsweinguter (VDP) organisation, a group of quality-conscious growers promoting the country’s top wines and estates. Only 5% of German wine is VDP qualified. The classification and rigour of VDP membership exceeds the usual German wine regulations and ensures top quality.
