Behind the Scenes in Bordeaux with Les Légendes R

The Rothschild family has been producing exceptional wine in Bordeaux since 1868. For six generations, they have been learning about this remarkable landscape and understanding the unique characteristics of the vines of each appellation. Three decades ago, the family decided to create a new range, where each wine would be the quintessence of its appellation of origin. Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite's motivation was simple: to ensure that all wine lovers could experience an immersion into the world of Bordeaux and taste the originality of each appellation. This is how the Les Légendes R range was born.

Bordeaux is a unique and welcoming place with a strong personality, just like the wines of Les Légendes R. With six generations of winemaking experience, the Rothschild family is truly able to give meaning to everything that characterises Bordeaux wines, in an enlightened and accessible way.

The range includes a vibrant and refreshing Bordeaux Blanc, a juicy and approachable Bordeaux Rouge, a spicy and supple Médoc, a rich and intense Saint Emilion, and a classically complex Pauillac. There really is something for everyone!

Bordeaux Blanc

What makes Les Légendes R Bordeaux Blanc so incredibly fresh and aromatic? Légendes winemakers harvest the grapes before sunrise to preserve their delicate aromas. The result is a wine that is bursting with flavour when you open the bottle. In addition to the fresh and aromatic Sauvignon Blanc main grape variety, the blend contains an unusual amount of Sémillon, a tradition of the Lafite group which has been producing a magnificent Sémillon in the Sauternes region of France for decades. Sémillon gives the wine its full volume and exceptional character on the palate, while improving the wine’s longevity.

Bordeaux Rouge

Lafite oenologists have been making the greatest wines of Bordeaux for over 150 years. Rich in local knowledge acquired over generations, the winegrowers know the secrets of the landscape where the most exceptional red Bordeaux is created. The Entre-deux-Mers is nestled between the rivers Garonne and Dordogne. This hilly region is rich in a variety of soils and a great diversity of terroirs, perfectly adapted to the Cabernet and Merlot grapes. It is this unique landscape that is the basis of the harmonious blend of aromas that emerge from our Red Bordeaux. A blend with a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, the signature grape variety of Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite.

Médoc

Rich in local knowledge acquired over generations, the winegrowers have learned the exact know how needed to create the most exceptional Médoc wine. The name of this peninsula comes from the Latin «In medio Aquae», which means «in the middle of the waters». It is this exceptional geographical location, between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean, which allows the slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, the king grape variety that gives our Médoc its extraordinary taste.

Saint-Emilion

The Légendes winegrowers know that the secret to creating a Saint-Emilion wine lives underground. The limestone-rich soil on the right bank of the river is ideal for growing Merlot. It is these secrets that explain the voluptuous wines for which the Saint-Emilion appellation is renowned. The wines produced in Saint-Emilion are voluptuous, complex and a real pleasure to taste. Lafite’s teams have been producing Merlot on the right bank of the river for nearly thirty years.

Pauillac

The landscape of Pauillac is almost entirely white due to the clear pebbles that cover the gravelly soil. It is in this multi-layered terroir that lies the secret of Pauillac’s exceptional and age-old wines. The Pauillac appellation includes three of the five 1855 First Great Classified Growths. The grapes for Les Légendes R - Pauillac wines come in part from the family’s own vineyards, the famous Château Lafite and Château Duhart-Milon. These wines are matured in oak barrels made by DBR Lafite's own cooperage which is located nearby. They contribute to the style of the house and give the wine its incomparable elegance.
